Jamie Mariott's At the Silverstone 24 Hour Kart race
On the weekend of the 16th and 17th of July, Third Year Award Winner Jamie Marriott, alongside some friends of the Simon Diffey Heritage Motorsport Award, competed in the first ever 24-hour endurance race at the newly opened Kart Silverstone track. They started well, with a shot at the top ten out of forty-five karts, until a pit lane speeding penalty (thankfully not incurred by Jamie himself) put them down into the mid-thirties, where they would fight until the end of the race, finishing in the still respectable place of thirty sixth.
This was the teams’ first ever 24-hour endurance race, with every team member being brand new to endurance racing. Jamie had the midnight shift, driving from 23:45 until 01:45, seeing in day two of the event.
All of the team members got medals for their efforts, with promises of this not being the teams’ final outing together. Jamie has certainly been bitten by the racing bug, as he has already booked himself in for another 24-hour karting event at Teesside in June!
The Silverstone 24 Hour Kart Race is available for viewing on YouTube, with all 24 hours and more being broadcast, featuring interviews with the drivers as well. The team that our Award Winner was a part of was called Sofa King Fast, should you wish to follow along with them on their first endurance karting adventure.
